Free versions there are FREE keyword suggestion tool and Google Keyword Tool. This work fine, but I still prefer the better supported paid version such as Keyword Elite and PPC Web Spy.

The days of people only typing a single primary keyword into a search engine are long gone, and the long tail of search is where it is at. Fortunately this trend throws the door wide open to words and combinations of words used to express what people are searching for, and makes for much more opportunity. Figuring out the right combiantions is key here, and a dedicated keyword tool definitley makes this process just a little bit easier.

If I remember correctly, there is no public access to Google keyword database. You could probably use a packet sniffer to figure out how Google Toolbar in your favorite browser does it…
